Apple has officially entered the iPhone 18 generation, but this year’s launch looks very different from previous iPhone releases.

Instead of unveiling the entire lineup at its September event, Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the standard iPhone 18 was noticeably absent.

The company also introduced its first foldable iPhone, called the iPhone Duo, but it is a separate product rather than an iPhone 18 model.

That leaves buyers with an unusual situation. The most expensive iPhone 18 models are already official, while the regular iPhone 18 and other more affordable models are still waiting for their turn.

Here is everything you need to know about the iPhone 18 series, including the confirmed specifications, prices, release dates and what is still only based on reports.

iPhone 18 series: what has Apple actually launched?

As of September 2026, Apple has officially announced two iPhone 18 models:

  • iPhone 18 Pro
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max

Both were unveiled on September 9, 2026.

The regular iPhone 18 was not announced.

Apple’s new foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, was also introduced at the event, but Apple is treating it as its own product rather than calling it an iPhone 18 model.

This is a major change from Apple’s traditional strategy of launching its main iPhone models together in September.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: what’s new?

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max bring several major upgrades over the previous generation.

The Pro has a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display. Both feature Apple’s ProMotion display technology with refresh rates of up to 120Hz.

The two phones are available in four finishes:

  • Deep Black
  • Silver
  • Glacier
  • Burgundy

The new Burgundy option gives the Pro lineup a noticeably different look, while the return of a dark black option gives buyers a more traditional colour choice.

A20 Pro chip powers the new iPhones

Both iPhone 18 Pro models are powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.

The chip uses a 2nm manufacturing process and includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and 32-core Neural Engine, according to Apple’s specifications reported at launch.

Apple is also using a new vapor chamber cooling system to help the phones maintain performance during demanding workloads.

That could be particularly useful for gaming, video editing and other tasks that put sustained pressure on the processor.

The A20 Pro is also designed around Apple’s growing focus on on-device artificial intelligence, making it an important part of the company’s Apple Intelligence strategy.

The biggest camera upgrade is variable aperture

One of the most significant changes to the iPhone 18 Pro camera system is the addition of a variable-aperture main camera.

iPhone 18 Pro variable aperture camera system
The iPhone 18 Pro introduces a variable-aperture 48MP main camera.

The 48MP Fusion Main camera can adjust its aperture, giving the camera greater control over how much light enters the lens.

That can be useful in both bright and low-light conditions and gives photographers more control over depth of field.

The rear camera system consists of:

  • 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture
  • 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera
  • 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera

Apple has also added more professional camera controls, while the phones support advanced video features including 4K Dolby Vision recording.

This makes the camera one of the clearest reasons for professional photographers and content creators to consider the new Pro models.

Battery life is getting better

Battery life is another major selling point of the new Pro models.

Apple describes the iPhone 18 Pro lineup as offering the longest battery life ever available on an iPhone.

The iPhone 18 Pro can provide up to 36 hours of video playback, while the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours under Apple’s testing conditions.

The Pro Max’s larger physical size allows it to accommodate a larger battery, while Apple’s newer chip and power-management improvements also contribute to efficiency.

The Dynamic Island gets smaller

Apple has not completely removed the Dynamic Island from the iPhone 18 Pro.

Instead, it has made it smaller.

Apple has made the Dynamic Island smaller on the iPhone 18 Pro.

The redesigned Dynamic Island can display up to three Live Activities at once, allowing users to keep track of information such as navigation, music and live updates without constantly switching between apps.

This also means that some earlier rumours about Apple completely eliminating the Dynamic Island with under-display Face ID did not materialise with the iPhone 18 Pro.

New C2 modem and faster connectivity

The iPhone 18 Pro models also introduce Apple’s next-generation C2 modem.

The phones support 5G, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, alongside Apple’s newer wireless networking hardware.

For everyday users, these upgrades may not immediately change how the phone feels, but they should make the iPhone 18 Pro better equipped for newer networks and accessories over the next few years.

The phones also retain USB-C connectivity, with USB 3 support.

Up to 2TB of storage

Storage has also received a major upgrade.

Both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are available with:

  • 256GB
  • 512GB
  • 1TB
  • 2TB

The 2TB configuration is particularly aimed at users who record a lot of high-resolution video or store large amounts of content directly on their phones.

However, the larger storage options come at a significant premium, so most everyday users are unlikely to need the 2TB model.

How much does the iPhone 18 Pro cost?

Apple has increased the starting prices of both Pro models by $100 compared with their predecessors.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, also with 256GB of storage.

That makes the Pro Max one of Apple’s most expensive conventional iPhones before adding more storage.

The standard iPhone 18 does not yet have an official price because Apple has not announced it.

When does the iPhone 18 Pro go on sale?

Apple has confirmed the launch schedule for the Pro models.

Pre-orders begin on September 12, 2026, while general availability begins on September 18, 2026 in the initial markets.

The exact availability date can vary between countries, so buyers outside Apple’s first-wave markets should check local retailers and Apple’s regional availability.

What happened to the regular iPhone 18?

This is probably the biggest story surrounding the iPhone 18 series.

Apple did not announce the standard iPhone 18 at its September event.

Reports had already suggested that Apple planned to split its iPhone release schedule, with the Pro models launching in September and the standard models arriving later.

Those reports turned out to be accurate.

Current reporting points to the regular iPhone 18 arriving in early 2027, potentially alongside other more affordable models. However, Apple has not yet announced an official release date.

This distinction is important because many specifications circulating online for the standard iPhone 18 are still rumours.

What do we know about the standard iPhone 18?

Very little has been officially confirmed.

Apple has not announced the standard iPhone 18’s:

  • Price
  • Exact display specifications
  • Camera system
  • Processor configuration
  • Storage options
  • Colours
  • Battery capacity
  • Official release date

Reports suggest that Apple could launch the standard iPhone 18 during the first quarter of 2027, but this remains unconfirmed by Apple.

There are also reports that an updated iPhone 18e and a new-generation iPhone Air could arrive around the same period.

For now, these should be treated as expected products rather than confirmed members of the iPhone 18 lineup.

What about the iPhone 18e and iPhone Air?

Apple has not officially announced either device as part of the iPhone 18 generation.

However, multiple reports have pointed to a spring 2027 launch window for a more affordable iPhone 18e, alongside the standard iPhone 18. A refreshed iPhone Air has also been mentioned in reports, although its exact timing has been less certain.

That means readers should be careful with articles claiming to know the final specifications of these phones.

Until Apple announces them, features such as their cameras, displays, chips and prices remain unconfirmed.

What about the foldable iPhone?

Apple has also introduced its first foldable iPhone, but it should not be confused with the iPhone 18 Pro or standard iPhone 18.

Apple calls the device iPhone Duo.

Apple iPhone Duo foldable iPhone
Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, is a separate product from the iPhone 18 series.

It has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display when unfolded. It measures 5.2mm thick when open and weighs 254 grams.

Apple says pre-orders begin October 16, with availability from October 23, 2026.

Because Apple has given it a separate name, it is more accurate to cover the iPhone Duo separately rather than describing it as an “iPhone 18 Ultra” or “iPhone 18 Fold.”

iPhone 18 series: confirmed vs rumours

With so many leaks surrounding Apple’s phones, separating confirmed information from speculation is important.

  • Nigerian pricing for the standard iPhone 18

How much will the iPhone 18 cost in Nigeria?

There is no official Nigerian price for the standard iPhone 18 because Apple has not launched it yet.

The same applies to official local pricing for the Pro models.

Nigerian retailers are expected to sell imported iPhone 18 Pro models at prices above Apple’s US starting prices because of exchange rates, import costs, taxes, shipping and retailer margins.

For that reason, early Nigerian listings should not be presented as Apple’s official Nigerian prices.

The safest approach is to wait for official local pricing or clearly label retailer prices as estimates.

Should you wait for the iPhone 18?

If you want an iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max, there is no need to wait for another announcement. Both phones are official, and their specifications and pricing have been confirmed.

But if you want the regular iPhone 18, waiting makes more sense.

Apple has not announced that model yet, and current reports point toward a 2027 launch.

For most buyers, the decision will ultimately come down to price. The iPhone 18 Pro introduces meaningful camera, performance and battery upgrades, but buyers who do not need those features may prefer to wait for the cheaper standard model.

The bottom line

The iPhone 18 series is shaping up to be one of Apple’s most unusual iPhone launches.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are already official, bringing Apple’s A20 Pro chip, a new variable-aperture 48MP main camera, improved battery life, a smaller Dynamic Island, new connectivity hardware and up to 2TB of storage.

But the standard iPhone 18 is not here yet.

Apple appears to be moving toward a staggered iPhone release schedule, with the more affordable models expected to arrive in 2027. Reports also point to an iPhone 18e and a future iPhone Air, but Apple has not confirmed their specifications.

So, for now, the safest way to look at the iPhone 18 generation is simple: the Pro models are facts, while much of what we know about the standard iPhone 18 is still speculation.
